In 2008, the Twin Lakes Library System is celebrating its first 70 years of service to the Milledgeville and Baldwin County community.

Please join us as we honor the Library's birthday! We're having a year-long celebration of the last 70 years and want you to join us. Listed below are activities and events that will take place during 2008; please take part in looking back at our first 70 years, as well as preparing for our next 70!

February

In February, we focus on the Graham Branch Library, housed in the Graham housing facility from 1961-1973. Join African-American City and County leadership and civic organizations in celebrating the branch, as we donate a plaque to the Milledgeville Housing Authority commemorating the branch.

August

Our History in Film. In August, Academy Award winning/nominated films from each of the decades of the Library's existence will be shown. With two films each week, you'll have plenty of chances to see slices of history in film!

March

Our "Victory Book Drive" remembers and celebrates the "Victory Book Drive" held in 1942. During March, the library will gather book donations to send to our soldiers in hospitals, camps and bases. Bring in your good used books so we can show our support for the troops!

September

Local Artists Art Exhibit. Working together with Allied Arts, the library will provide a special local artists exhibit to run the month of September. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to see unique works of art created by members of our community.

April

Patron Appreciation Month. In April, our focus opens to include our patrons. As we did last year during Patron Appreciation Month, we will also be conducting Amnesty Month. For this year's Amnesty Month, we will feature late fees at the 1938 rate of $0.02 per item per day! This special low rate is subject to some restrictions, so be sure to ask library staff about this. In addition to lowered late fees, we will focus the spotlight on some of our community members who had a hand in the Library's creation and development over the years.

October

Our History in Fashion. Join us as we showcase fashion styles for each decade the Library has been in existence, come by the library in your old-fashioned best! We're encouraging staff members and our patrons to show off their best costumes from each time period. At the end of the month, we'll award the best "period-piece" patron and staff costumes to come through our doors!

May

Books on the Move! This month we shine the spotlight on the library's 1940s bookmobile service. We'll be reenacting the initial bookmobile travels from February 1942, taking some of our collection out into our community. Join us as we celebrate this historic moment in our history!

November

The Library loves our Veterans. This month, we shine the spotlight on those in our community who have served our community through their military service. Look for special events in conjunction with our local Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Sons of Confederate Veterans groups.

June

Vacation Reading Club. "Catch the Reading Bug" and "Metamorphosis" with us this summer! In addition to our usual Reading Club activities, we will honor participants from the inaugural Reading Club of 1938 who are still living. These VRC "celebrities" will be special VIPs during the course of the VRC.

December

Year-end reception. Join us for a special reception to thank the community for its support and look forward to our next 70 years and beyond!

July

Continuing with our Vacation Reading Club activities, we will give 3 special awards at the end of the month. the participants who read the most books in each age category (1st-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-12th grade) will receive 4 movie theater passes each. This was the prize given in 1938 after the inaugural Vacation Reading Club.

Other activities during the year:

- Movies representing the 8 decades in which the Library has existed. These will be shown once a month for March-May and August-December.

- Special "Library News" newspaper columns. Look for special library-related fun facts and historical milestones in your local newspapers. This is in honor of the "Library News" column that ran weekly in the Union-Recorder in the mid-1960s.
